A barrier to healthcare is a non-medical situation that causes people to avoid or delay healthcare. Avoiding healthcare puts people at a higher risk for disease. They allow diseases to become advanced and difficult and expensive to treat.

What are different types of barriers?

There are many circumstances that can cause people to put off or avoid healthcare. A barrier can also be a belief, emotion or attitude. Barriers can be due to:

  • Low income or lack of insurance
  • Geographic location or transportation
  • Culture
  • Language or literacy
  • The healthcare system
